How to Make a Schoolgirl Costume

How to Make a Schoolgirl Costume thumbnail
An apple is another prop option for a schoolgirl costume.

The schoolgirl costume is a perennial favorite for Halloween and costume parties. Most versions are based on the Catholic schoolgirl uniform, an outfit whose most memorable piece may be the pleated plaid skirt. Overtly sexual versions of this costume are available at most costume stores, however, you can put your own costume together which allows you to make as many adjustments as needed depending on how much skin you care to show.

Things You'll Need

  • Pleated plaid skirt
  • White button-down shirt
  • Thigh-high stockings or ankle socks
  • Saddle shoes or high heels
  • Tie (optional)
  • Hair ties or barrettes

Instructions

    • 1

Browse consignment stores for pleated plaid skirts or borrow one from a friend if possible. Look for a white button-down shirt, if you do not already own one, and purchase thigh-high white or black stockings or white or black ankle socks. Choose your footwear, such as saddle shoes, platform shoes or high heels. If going for the platforms or high heels look for a black pair.

Put the costume on before doing hair and makeup to avoid hair mess-ups and smudged makeup that can end up on your white shirt collar. If you have long hair, try styling it in two pigtails, braids or a side ponytail. Wear visible ponytail holders for any of these looks. If you have short hair, use big barrettes on each side of the hair to pull it back and away from the face.

Wear lighter makeup as schoolgirls are just that -- girls. Try a light eyeshadow in one shade and sweep it across the entire eyelid. If you want to wear eyeliner go for brown rather than black as black eyeliner is more noticeable and severe. Use a creamy pink blush on cheeks and sweep a few brushes of mascara on the top and bottom lashes. Wear a clear or lightly-tinted lip gloss to complete the look.

Carry props if desired, such as a notebook and pen or chew bubble gum. Lollipops are another prop option.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a necktie to the costume if desired to make the outfit appear more formal.

  • Glitter lip gloss is another makeup option.
