How to Change Linksys Router Settings

Save

Your Linksys router allows you to set up a wired or wireless network, which allows you to share resources or an Internet connection. Because the router is a separate piece of hardware, which is itself part of the network, you have to access the administrative program remotely from your computer. This is done by logging into the router via its IP address. From there, any changeable setting is accessible.

  • Plug in your Linksys router and wait at least 10 seconds to initialize.

  • Plug an Ethernet cable from one of the numbered ports on your Linksys router to your computer's Ethernet port.

  • Open your browser, enter "http://192.168.1.1." in the address bar and press "Enter." If you changed your router's IP address, and can't remember it, open the Command Prompt, located in the Start Menu's "Accessories" folder, type "ipconfig," press "Enter" and look for "Default Gateway."

  • Enter your username and password in the authentication screen. By default, the username and password are "admin." This grants access to your Linksys router.

  • Change whatever settings you require, and then click "Save changes" at the bottom of the screen.
