How to Draw a Gingerbread Man & Girl
Gingerbread men are staples of the Christmas holiday. The gingerbread man fantasy sprang to life -- pun intended -- in an issue of "St. Nicholas", an American magazine, published in 1875. The story depicted the tasty treats as able to walk and talk. Making gingerbread men -- as both ornaments and cookies -- has since become an American past time. Drawing a gingerbread man and girl is a wise way to boost holiday joy with children, students or friends.

1
Draw a straight line down the center of the paper and a horizontal line across the middle. These lines mark the center point of the body. Draw three short, horizontal lines near the top of the vertical line to help with shaping the face.
-
2
Trace an oval shape that extends just above and below the three top horizontal lines. Stencil in three smaller ovals from the center point of the body, down the vertical line. The first oval acts as the head. The additional ovals indicate buttons.

Notice the end points on the body's horizontal line to indicate where the gingerbread hands should end. Use this reference to trace in the arms, torso and legs of the man. Make sure arms and legs are round and wide. Avoid extending legs any longer than the bottom of the body's vertical line.

4
Draw in eyes in between the first top two short, horizontal lines. Trace a smiling mouth in the space between the second and third short, horizontal lines. Add a bow tie just below the chin of the gingerbread figure if it is a man. Add a box on top of the gingerbread figure if it is a girl.

5
Color in the drawing. Use tan and brown colors for a classic gingerbread look. Shade and tint the figure with alternate colors for buttons and lips, for example, depending upon the gender. Use pinks, reds and pastel colors for a feminine quality. Color with bold blues, greens or yellows for a gingerbread man.
