How to Calculate Square Feet With Varying Perimeter
A room with a varying perimeter does not have a simple shape like a square or rectangle. Such a room might be "L"-shaped or have curved walls. If you want to find the square feet of a particular room in your home that has a varying perimeter, you can do so by taking specific measurements using a tape measure. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Draw an outline of the room with a varying perimeter on a piece of paper. This will help you decide which parts of the room need to be measured to accurately determine the square footage of the room.
-
2
Use a pencil to separate the drawing of your room into individual shapes. For example, if your room is shaped like two perpendicular rectangles, draw a line that separates the outline of the room into two perpendicular rectangles on your piece of paper.

3
Measure the length and width of your room with a tape measure, using the drawing you made and altered in Step 2 as a guide. For example, if you identified that your room looks like two perpendicular rectangles on your drawing, measure each of those rectangles with your tape measure. Write down the length and width measurements and the walls they correspond to on your drawing.

4
Multiply the length and width of each individual section of the room you measured to find the square footage for that section. For example, if one section of your room measured 12 feet wide by 20 feet long, 12 x 20 = 240 square feet. Repeat this process for the rest of the sections you identified and add all the square footage calculations together to find the total area of the room.
