How to Locate Relatives After an Accident
After an accident occurs, the first impulse is to get help immediately and the second is often to contact the accident victim's family members. Tracking down relatives can be easy if you know where to look. When tragedy occurs, these tips will come in handy as you attempt to locate close family and friends.

Check the cell phone. Reminders are in the media and on email alerts quite often these days, urging people to keep an ICE (in case of emergency) contact list in their cell phone directory. When an accident occurs, locate the victim's cell phone and look up any ICE listings. If she does not have an ICE category, check for a list of relatives under title, rather than actual name. Look for mom and dad, as well as pet names such as "my honey" to find numbers for loved ones.

Search the Next of Kin Registry (NOKR). The NOKR was established in 2004, offering a free tool for individuals worldwide to list their emergency contacts. Registered emergency agency personnel can search NOKR (pleasenotifyme.org/nok) when an accident occurs to track the victim's relatives.

Check clothing. Those involved in outdoor sports are often encouraged to keep emergency information on their clothing and other personal items when they run or bike. Check the inside of shoes, iPod cases and even dog tag necklaces or bracelets that might list identifying details with contact numbers.

Search for a planner or wallet. Many people keep emergency numbers in their personal planners and wallet. If an accident occurs, check through the victim's purse, briefcase and around the vehicle for these items.

Contact employer or school officials. If you know the victim is a student, contact school officials to learn who is listed on his school emergency contact form. If you know the victim's employer, give the employer a call to find contacts named in his personnel file.
