Both fiction and nonfiction are well suited for e-books.

Electronic books have been around for many years, but are growing in popularity with new generation e-book reader devices like Amazon's Kindle and the Nook. Readers are also choosing to read e-books on their iPads and similar devices. According to the Book Industry Study Group, 2010 saw a 3.5% increase in total e-book sales in 2010, making the total sales around $424.3 million. With trends toward electronic volumes increasing, publishing your own e-book makes more sense than every before.

Instructions

    • 1

Finish your book. This might sound simple, but you can't publish a book or sell a book that isn't completed. New writers often have a hard time with this step, underestimating how much time it will take to finish the manuscript.

Enlist the help of an editor, cover artist and book designer. If you are on a tight budget, find someone to trade services with or a trusted family member who is excellent at grammar, art or designing layouts in Microsoft Word.

    • 3

Place your book in Microsoft Word. Lay out the pages the way you'd like. You may need to adjust page settings to have opposite footers on odd and even pages and add in blank pages to ensure that the text starts on the right-hand side of the page. Another thing you'll want to do is to make sure a new chapter starts on a new page.

Convert your book into protected formats that will work with e-readers or for online reading. PDF is a popular e-book format. Use Doc2PDF.net to convert from MS Word into PDF format. To offer the book for the Kindle, you will need to go to the Amazon website, download the Mobipocket creator and convert your file to Mobi format. Other options for formatting include HTML or Rich Text Format (not recommended as you cannot protect it as easily from being copied and stolen).
