1
Get an adequate amount of sleep every night. The American Psychological Association (APA) website states that adolescents need 9.2 hours of sleep, not the 7-8 hours recommended for adults. Insufficient sleep can cause negative consequences in the classroom, including poor concentration, discipline problems and sleepiness, according to the APA website.

2
Avoid skipping breakfast in the mornings by making food the night before, purchasing prepared foods such as breakfast bars, and not eating a heavy dinner the night before. The glucose found in food provides your body and brain with energy, which improves memory, focus, productivity and behavior. By not eating breakfast, you deprive your body of energy during the four to five hours until lunch time.

3
Arrive to class on time and resist the temptation to skip classes. Many teachers, especially college professors, will take off points or letter grades for missed classes or tardiness. If you are unable to attend class, bring in an acceptable note so you are excused. Tardiness is not only disrespectful to your teacher and peers, it also increases your chance of missing important announcements or assignments.
-
4
Absorb as much knowledge as possible in class by sitting in front of the classroom, taking notes and asking questions. If you do not feel comfortable asking questions in front of the class, stay after the lesson to talk privately with your teacher. Paying attention in class will also show your teacher that you are dedicated and care about your academic success, which could benefit you later when seeking an extension for an assignment or extra credit.
-
5
Stay organized and keep yourself from forgetting to complete assignments by using a student planner. At the beginning of each week, write down all assignments with upcoming due dates and allot times that you will spend studying and doing homework.
-
6
Attend review sessions and study groups. Even if you do not have any questions, discussing topics with your peers will help familiarize you with the subject matter. Also, hearing other people's opinions and explanations could strengthen your own understanding or bring up questions you had not considered.
-
7
Do not cram for tests or assignments. Cramming, caused by procrastination, increases your chances of doing poorly and causes unnecessary stress and anxiety. Staying up all night to cram for a test will cause sleep deprivation, hindering your focus and memory.
