How to Make a Minky Washcloth

When soft and plush clothing and household items are the goal, consider minky fabric. Available in a variety of colors and prints, minky fabric can suit any taste and desire. Washcloths are a simple project to make with minky fabric. Because minky is a synthetic fabric, it holds up well as a washcloth. You can wash and dry a minky washcloth the same as you would launder a cotton washcloth.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-yard minky fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Disappearing fabric marker
  • Scissors
  • Serger sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Prewash the minky fabric using warm water and dry it in the dryer at a medium-heat setting.

    • 2

Lay out your minky fabric onto a flat work surface.

    • 3

Measure one 18-inch by 9-inch rectangle with the tape measure. Because you are using 1/4-yard of the minky fabric, the width of your minky fabric should already be 9 inches. This means you only need to measure 18 inches in the other direction.

    • 4

Draw a cutting line with the disappearing fabric marker after you measure 18 inches and then cut along the line with the scissors. Draw another cutting line to divide the 18-inch rectangle in half to make two 9-inch squares and cut along the line.

    • 5

Thread the serger with thread that contrasts to the minky fabric to create a fun and attractive edging around the minky washcloth.

    • 6

Place the two minky squares together with wrong sides facing in and right sides facing out. Pin the squares together.

    • 7

Serge around the four raw edges of the minky squares with the serger. There is no need to hem the edges; serging is sufficient.

    • 8

Stitch lines diagonally across the minky washcloth with the sewing machine to make a large "X." Stitch the first line between the upper left corner and the bottom right corner. Stitch the second line between the upper right corner and the bottom left corner. This stitching will keep the minky washcloth layers from shifting as you use the washcloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many manufacturers recommend prewashing when you use minky fabric in sewing projects. Prewashing is not a mandatory step when you use minky for a simple project like washcloths.

  • If you do not have a serger, place the squares together with right sides facing in. Stitch around the edges with a 1/4-inch seam allowance and leave a 3-inch gap for turning. Turn the washcloth right side out and stitch the opening closed. Stitch an "X" from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner and the upper right corner to the bottom left corner.
