How to Burn VLC Media Files to DVD

Burn VLC media files to a DVD-R for play in a DVD player that is compatible with digital videos.

The VLC media player is an open source multimedia player that is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows based computers. The .VLC media files that accompany the player are a container format for video files that are saved in one of the many compatible video codes including .AVI, .WMV, .MOV, .MP4 and .FLV. The files can be burned to a DVD in a few steps if you want transfer the files to a different computer, archive the files, or play them on DVD players that support digital formats.

Step 1

Insert a blank DVD-R or DVD+R disc into the computer's disc drive. Click on the "Burn files to data disc" option in the "Auto Play" window that opens once the disc is recognized.

Step 2

Select a name for the DVD disc and click "Show Formatting Options." Choose the "Mastered" format and click on the "Next" button to format the DVD and open a staging folder for the burn process.

Step 3

Right-click "Start" and choose "Explore." Open the folder that contains the VLC media files. Click on a VLC file and drag it into the staging folder. Press down the "Ctrl" key to select multiple files at once. Wait for the files to be copied into the folder.

Step 4

Click on the "Burn To Disc" button from the staging folder's toolbar to start the burn process. Your disc burner will write the VLC media files to the DVD. The disc will be ejected from the drive when the process is complete.
