How Do You Hook Up Your Firewire to a Computer That Only Has USB Ports?

FireWire and USB are both technologies that allow peripheral devices to connect to computers. USB powers a wider range of devices while FireWire tends to specialize in devices that require heavy data transfer, such as digital cameras. The technologies are not ordinarily compatible. A computer with only USB ports will not be able connect to and power FireWire devices unless there is an intermediary device. This device, known as an adapter, receives signals from the FireWire and converts them into something that the USB port can relay to the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the larger end of the FireWire cable into the matching port on the adapter.

    • 2

Locate the USB cord that extends from the adapter and plug it into an available USB port on the computer.

    • 3

Plug the other end of the FireWire cable into the device to be connected.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your device contains on-board drivers, and if it is compatible with the operating system you are connecting it to, the drivers will download into the computer automatically.

  • Keep in mind that FireWire technology is faster than USB 2.0. A device connecting to a computer through an adapter will be a bit slower than usual.
