How to Get a Job Making Commercials With a Degree in Film Marketing

Advertising agencies usually hire commercial production companies to create commercials for ad campaigns that they have developed. The advertising executives oversee the production of the commercial while a director films it. A degree in marketing and film would qualify someone to work at an ad agency in a creative capacity, or at a commercial production company in an executive capacity. Both fields, advertising and commercial production, are difficult to break into, but can be accomplished with patience and persistence.

  • Work at an advertising agency. Start as an intern, or in an entry-level position. Learn every aspect of how the company works. The more you know about the advertising business, the easier it will be to help advertisers sell their products...and for you to advance in your career.

  • Earn your way onto a creative account. Use your knowledge of film and marketing to help the creative team develop ideas that sell on advertising campaigns.

  • Assist the commercial production house by executing the advertising campaign, as directed by the advertisers. Express your knowledge of film and of marketing. Knowledge of marketing is more important than knowledge of film at this point.

  • Direct the advertising campaign when given the chance. This is where your knowledge of film and knowledge of marketing can be put to full use. Work alongside the product representative to create an advertising objective based on market research.

  • Oversee the actual production of a commercial. Work alongside the principals of the production company and the director of the commercial.

Tips & Warnings

  • The same steps apply to working at a commercial production house. However, the value of a film marketing degree will be less, since most commercial production companies do not initiate advertising and marketing campaigns.
