How to Get Scores for Cheerleader Tryouts

How to Get Scores for Cheerleader Tryouts thumbnail
Cheerleading tryouts are competitive athletic events.

Cheerleading is a physically demanding sport that requires enthusiasm, coordination, strength and balance. Trying out for a cheerleading squad can be stressful and tryouts are often highly competitive. Cheerleading coaches and judges score individuals on motions, jumps, voice projection, eye contact and energy. After the tryout, you will be able to obtain your cheerleading scores.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend a cheerleading tryout meeting. At the meeting, you will be instructed on the expectations of cheerleaders -- costs, uniforms, practices, games, competitions and physical expectations of a cheerleader.

    • 2

Dress the part. Many cheerleading organizations require that girls dress in uniform for tryouts. A tryout uniform will often consist of a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and white sneakers. Pull back long hair. Cheerleaders should wear minimal make-up and remove all jewelry.

    • 3

Be enthusiastic. Smile, make eye contact, have a high energy level and be loud. Your voice should be strong; avoid singing the words to a cheer.

    • 4

Make your motions strong and clear cut. Cheerleading cheers and dances need to be performed with precision. Practice your routine over and over before the tryout to ensure you have the motions down.

    • 5

Practice jumps, flips and stunts. Some cheer organizations will request these movements as part of tryout requirements.

    • 6

Give it your all. Go into tryouts with confidence, and cheer your heart out.

    • 7

Wait for the results. After tryouts, most organizations will post a list of girls who made the squad.

    • 8

Wait for your scores. Many cheerleading coaches will pass out sealed envelopes containing score sheets. Whether you made the squad or not, your score sheet can provide insight how to improve your cheerleading skills.

Tips & Warnings

  • A large number of girls often try-out for a cheerleading squad with only around 10 spaces. Do not be discouraged if you do not make the team. Practice hard and try again next time.
