How to Operate Windows Live Photo Gallery for Windows 7

Windows 7 does not have its own photo-management application. But you can download the Windows Live Essentials suite for free and use Photo Gallery. The new Photo Gallery is designed to work seamlessly with Windows 7, your email program and favorite sharing sites. It comes with organizing tools such as tagging, rating and face recognition, a search tool, basic enhancements and integration with popular sites such as Facebook and YouTube. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced photo hobbyist, you will find that Photo Gallery has a lot to offer.

Instructions

    • 1

Type "photo gallery" in the "Start" menu search bar. Click "Windows Live Photo Gallery" in the results to launch the program. By default, Photo Gallery displays all recognizable picture files in the "Pictures" library.

    • 2

Click the blue button to the left of the "Home" tab and click "Include folder" to add an existing folder to the "Pictures" library. You will see a dialog box where you can click an "Add" button and then select a folder to add to the library. If you want to copy images from an external device such as a digital camera, click "Import pictures and videos" instead and choose the device to import from. Make sure it is turned on and connected to the computer.

    • 3

Click any folder on the folder tree on the left in the main Photo Gallery window. When you click a folder, Photo Gallery opens it and displays its contents on the right side of the window.

    • 4

Click a picture to add a tag to it. If it is a picture of a person, click "People tag" in the "Home" tab and select "Tag a person." You can type the name of a new person to add to a list of people, or you can select a name from an existing list of name tags. To tag a non-person item, click "Descriptive tag" instead and select "Tag an item" to enter a name for that picture, say "Christmas" or "Parks."

    • 5

Click the yellow star to rate a selected photo. Or click the red flag to flag a photo.

    • 6

Click the "Edit" tab to select an enhancement. Photo Gallery lets you edit pictures in different ways, including rotate, resize, noise reduction, straighten, color adjustment and exposure. If you need to manually control the settings, double-click a picture and select "Fine tune" on the Photo Gallery ribbon. If you make changes and decide you do not like it, click "Revert to original."

    • 7

Click the "Find" tab for a variety of search options. You can apply different filters to search for pictures such as date, rating, tags, online publishing date, flags and media type.

    • 8

Click "View" to control which information is displayed in Photo Gallery. With lots of features, you will most likely want to limit the details that appear when you browse the pictures. Click the type of tags you want to display, say "Person" and toggle other options such as "Rating" or "Flag" on or off.

    • 9

Click the "Create" tab if you want to publish or share your photos online. From Photo Gallery, you can select pictures and then share them directly via email, a blog post or your favorite sites, including Facebook, SkyDrive, YouTube or Flckr.

Tips & Warnings

  • Photo Gallery may ask "Who is this?" next to a close-up of a person's face in a picture. Type or select the name of that person. The more people you tag in photos, the better Photo Gallery gets at face recognition.

  • You can assign multiple tags to the same image, say "Favorites" and "Space Needle." To separate tags, write the tag, hit "Enter" and add another tag.

  • Photo Gallery automatically saves changes. If you do not want to keep changes, click "Revert to original."
