How to Put Songs on an iPad

Like its smaller cousins, the iPod and iPhone, the iPad uses iTunes to facilitate the transfer of music from your computer to the device. In order to transfer your music to your iPad, you need to add your music to your iTunes library on your computer. You can then use iTunes to create rules for how iTunes transfers your music to your iPad when it is connected to your computer. You can set iTunes to transfer all of your computer's music to your iPad automatically, transfer certain music automatically, or you can configure manual music transfers.

Things You'll Need

  • iPad USB data cable
  • Download and install iTunes from Apple's website if it is not already installed on your computer. Open iTunes from the "All Programs" section of your computer's Start menu.

  • Select "Add Folder To Library" from the "File" menu. Go to the folder on your computer that contains your music and click "OK." ITunes will automatically add all of your music to your iTunes library. Repeat this step for each separate folder on your computer that contains music. If you have one folder on your computer that contains all of your music subfolders, you only need to select the folder that contains the subfolders, not each individual subfolder.

  • Plug the rectangular end of your iPad's data cable into an available USB port on your computer. Plug the other end of the cable into your iPad. Click on your iPad's icon in the "Devices" section of the left side panel.

  • Select the "Music" tab near the top of the screen. Check "Sync Music." Select "Entire Music Library" to move all of the music on your computer to iTunes. Select "Selected Playlists, Artists, and Genres" to only move certain files. Check items in the "Playlists" and "Artists" boxes to transfer them to your iPad each time you connect it to your computer.

  • Click "Apply" to apply the changes and transfer your computer's music to your iPad. Select "Merge Data" to merge the new content with the content that is already on your iPad.

Tips & Warnings

  • Select "Manually Manage Music And Videos" in the "Summary" tab to disable automatic synchronization. In manual mode, you can drag items, such as tracks, artists, genres or albums, from your iTunes library to the iPad icon in the left side panel to transfer the items to your device.
