How to Change File Types in Windows Vista Basic

When your computer opens a file, it uses the file's extension to decide which type of file it is looking at and which program(s) can open it. A file extension is a three- or four-letter sequence preceded by a period at the end of the file name. Common extensions include .jpeg, .exe and .avi. If you use Windows Vista Basic and want to change the type of file you are using, you can do so by changing the file extension.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" button, click "Computer" and press "Alt."

    • 2

Click on the "Tools" tab in the menu that appears. Click "Folder Options."

    • 3

Click on the tab marked "View."

    • 4

Uncheck the box next to the "Hide extensions for known file types" option. Click "OK."

    • 5

Right-click on the file for which you want to change the extension and click "Rename."

    • 6

Delete the three or four letter file extension after the period at the end of the file name. Type a new extension after the period to change the file type.
