One of the jobs of graphics artists is to repair or retouch photos that would be perfect except for some slight but obvious flaw. For example, when taking a photo of a woman's face for a magazine cover or ad, you generally want the eyelashes to be prominent. However, in the wrong light, eyelashes can sometimes seem to disappear. If you want to fix this problem in your own photos but don't have the expensive software that the professionals have, you can use the freeware application GIMP to add the eyelashes your photo needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the photo you want to edit onto your computer. You can do this either by transferring the image from a digital source like a camera via a USB cord, or you can use a scanner to scan in a printed copy.

    • 2

Open GIMP by selecting "File" from the menu and then choosing "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate the file you loaded and open it.

    • 3

Select the "Paintbrush" tool from the toolbar on the upper left of the GIMP interface. In the brush options that appear on the lower left, adjust the brush "Scale" to the approximate thickness you would like the eyelashes to be. Test this by doing a stroke on the canvas and then undoing it until you have the size right.

    • 4

Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar. Click on the point where you want the first eyelash to begin. Next, click where you want the eyelash to end, holding down the left mouse button and dragging it to adjust the curve of the path to look like an eyelash.

    • 5

Hold down the "Shift" key, and click to add the first point of the next eyelash. Holding down the "Shift" key as you do this tells GIMP not to place a path between the last point of the first eyelash and the first point of the second. Click and drag again to add the second point of the second eyelash. Repeat this step to add all the paths for the eyelashes.

Go to the "Options" panel on the lower left, and then click "Stroke Path." In the dialog that appears, click "Stroke With a Paint Tool." From the options, choose "Paintbrush." Click on "Emulate Brush Dynamics" followed by "Stroke." You now have eyelashes.

Select "File" from the menu, and then choose "Save." In the dialog that appears, choose the file type you want, name your file, choose the location you want to save to and click "Save."
