How to Make Onion Paste for a Toothache

How to Make Onion Paste for a Toothache thumbnail
Rid yourself of tooth pain with the help of an onion.

A toothache can be downright bothersome, whether you have sharp, shooting pain or a dull, throbbing ache. In some cases, a toothache can lead to jaw pain or even a full-blown headache, making eating painful, and keeping you awake at night. Visit your dentist if you have a toothache that persists for a few days, since it may be caused by a cavity, an abscess, or an even more serious problem. While you're waiting to see your dentist, you can temporarily relieve the throbbing with a vegetable that's a staple in many kitchens.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2 large onion
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Saucepan with cover
  • Blender or food processor
  • Bowl
  • Blunt kitchen utensil or fork
  • Mortar and pestal (optional)

Instructions

  1. Blender Method

    • 1

Slice half of a large onion into thick chunks and place them in a saucepan with 1/2 cup of water. Heat on low heat on your stove and cover for 20 minutes. Stir the onions every five minutes.

    • 2

Place the onion chunks into a blender or food processor, after they have finished cooking. Blend them thoroughly until they form a pasty mixture.

    • 3

Place a tiny dab of the paste on the affected area and let sit there. Once it stops working, rinse it out and add some fresh paste.

    Crushing Method

    • 4

Slice half of a large onion into stringy pieces then chop the pieces as finely as possible. Use the flat side of your chopping knife and bring it down on onion pieces to crush them and make them juicy. Place the pieces in a large bowl.

    • 5

Boil 1/2 cup of water for five minutes then pour the water into the bowl with the onion pieces. Mash up the pieces with a blunt kitchen utensil or a fork to make a paste. Alternatively, you can use a mortar and pestle.

    • 6

Place a tiny dab of the paste on the affected area and let sit there. Once it stops working, rinse it out and add some fresh paste.

Tips & Warnings

  • To further relieve pain, take an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin -- all of which can also reduce swelling and inflammation.

  • Visit your dentist if your toothache persists for a few days. The onion remedy will provide you with temporary relief but it won't address the underlying issue that's causing the pain, which may get worse over time.
