How to Cook Sausage on Skewers
Sausage skewers make convenient and tasty bite-size party dishes. When making the skewers, include ingredients that complement the flavor of the sausage. Turn a sausage skewer into an all-in-one meal by adding fresh vegetables, such as peppers and onions. Sausage skewers make hearty appetizers or light warm-weather meals. Things You'll Need
- Bamboo skewers
- 10 sausage links
- Red onions, red, green and yellow bell peppers, shallots or tomatoes, cut into bite-size pieces
- Olive oil
- Pastry brush
- Broiler pan

Soak the bamboo skewers in water for an hour to keep them from burning under the broiler. Boil 10 Italian-style sausage or bratwurst links in water over medium-high heat for four minutes, or until they begin to firm up. Remove the sausages from the water and allow to them to cool. Preheat your oven's broiler.

Slice the sausages into 1-inch pieces. Cut vegetables into bite-size pieces.

Thread the sausage slices onto the skewers, alternating them with the vegetable pieces. Allow 1-inch spaces at the bottom of each skewer so they can be easily held while eating.

Place the skewers in a broiling pan. Brush the sausage and vegetables with a light coat of olive oil using a pastry brush.

Position the oven rack four to five inches under the broiler and place the pan with skewers on top. Broil the skewers for eight to 10 minutes, or until the sausage is cooked all the way through and the vegetables are crisp-tender.

Tips & Warnings
Using a food thermometer, make sure the sausage has an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit before serving.
