How to Make a Silhouette With the GIMP

Silhouettes are two dimensional shapes that represent the outline of some person, animal or object. Such silhouettes have a dramatic appearance and are often used in advertising, posters and books covers to suggesting mystery or danger. If you would like to create your own silhouette, you do not need an expensive and complex application like Adobe Photoshop. Instead, you can easily create a silhouette using the freeware application GIMP.

Instructions

    • 1

Load an image that contains an object you want to make into a silhouette.

    • 2

Open GIMP. Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog box that appears, find the image you want to work with and open it.

    • 3

Go to the bottom of the "Layers" panel and click on the "New Layer" button. Select the new layer.

    • 4

Select the "Path" tool from the toolbar on the left and use it to draw a path around the object you want to make into a silhouette. The Path tool is a vector tool that allows for exact selections. By dragging the mouse each time you add a point to the path, you can refine the shape of the lines between the points.

Select the "Paint Bucket" tool from the toolbar and use it to fill the path with black or the color of your choice. Select the bottom layer and click on the "Eye" next to it to hide it. Save your work.
