How to Import From Quicktime to iMovie
Using iMovie, you can make and edit your own movies using audio, video, still images and text. IMovie is compatible with QuickTime movie files (MOV) as long as they are formatted with the DV codec, which separates the audio and video components. Apple iMovie software also supports MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, and AIC video codecs.
