How to Create Kindle Documents on OSX

You can create your own Kindle documents on your Mac OS X using Apple's TextEdit applications and a free e-book conversion software called Calibre. Calibre is capable of converting text documents, and many other formats, into MOBI format for Kindle, as well as other formats for other e-readers, including EPUB. While Calibre contains many advanced features, don't let them confuse you. Creating a well-formatted document for your Kindle takes only a couple of minutes and a few clicks of your mouse.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Applications" folder in the Finder. Then double-click on "TextEdit."

    • 2

Create your document in TextEdit. Font styles will not be saved. Use font sizes of 10, 12, 14 and 18 only. Use "Left Align" formatting. Do not use tabs or tables, as they will not be converted to the Kindle document.

    • 3

Click the "File" menu and select "Save As ... " Then save the document in plain text unicode (.txt) format.

    • 4

      Download Calibre for OS X.

    • 5

Double-click the "calibre-0.7.54.dmg" file. Numbers may be different depending on the version downloaded. The Calibre application will open in a new window in the Finder. Drag it to your "Applications" folder. Then launch Calibre.

    • 6

Click the "Add Books" icon on the top menu. Then navigate to your document. Click "Open." The book will be added to a list of books in the main window. Highlight the book.

    • 7

Click the "Convert Books" icon on the top menu.

    • 8

Select the "Output Format" from the drop-down menu. For Kindle, select "MOBI."

    • 9

Type a title for the document, author, publisher and key word tags in the empty fields. You can also add comments in the "Comments" field if desired.

    • 10

Select cover image, if desired, by clicking the "Browse" icon next to the "Change cover image." field. Calibre will use a default cover image if you do not select one.

    • 11

Click the "Page Setup" icon on the left of the window. Select "Kindle" or "Kindle DX" in the Output Profile field.

    • 12

Click "OK." You can find the new Kindle document in the "Calibre Library" folder under your user profile in the Finder. Books are sorted in folders organized by author name.

    • 13

Connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable. It will appear as a new menu item at the top of the Calibre window. Highlight the Kindle document in Calibre. Then click the "Send to Device" icon on the top menu. You can remove it later by clicking on the "Kindle" icon, selecting the document, then clicking the "Remove Books" icon.
