How to Clean Corals
Coral is stunning when it is dried and put into a fish tank, but over time is becomes dirty and filled with bacteria. In order to keep your tank healthy, periodic cleanings are required. Coral art work or jewelry can simply be dusted off with a dusting cloth, but coral kept in water needs to be chlorinated and soaked. When you clean your tank, check the coral to see if it needs to be cleaned along with the water. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 5 gallon bucket
- Trash can
- Water
- Waste drain
- Chlorine
- Dechlorinating agent

Remove coral from tank and put in plastic bucket. Take it outside where it can be cleaned without making a mess.

Fill bucket with water, covering coral. Add two and one-half cups of chlorinated bleach to the mixture.

Soak for 10 to 20 minutes until you notice less dirt and algae on the coral.

Remove coral from bucket, and dispose of the bleach water in a safe area such as a bathtub. Rinse the coral with clean water.

Place the coral back into the bucket and add a dechlorinating agent. Cover with water and allow to soak for 10 minutes. Remove from bucket and rinse.

Return coral to tank.
