How do I Make uTorrent Run Faster?

Allocate a port on your router to uTorrent to make downloads faster.

Torrent software is usually a quick way to share files and download them from other computer users. Sometimes the firewall or port settings on your Internet router can slow down the performance of torrent download tools such as uTorrent. To speed up uTorrent, allocate a specific port to the program on your router. This procedure is known as "port forwarding."

Instructions

1. Launch the uTorrent software on the computer.

2. Click "Options," "Preferences" and then "Connections."

3. Click the "Random Port" link once. Write down the port number provided.

4. Click to deselect the check box beside "Randomize Port Each Time uTorrent Starts."

5. Launch your Web browser and log in to the router's settings page. The address for most routers is "192.168.1.1" -- check your router's user manual if this doesn't work.

6. Click on "Port Forwarding" or "Port Triggering" in the settings menu. The precise location of this menu option varies, depending on the router, so check the router's help documentation if you can't find it.

7. Click "Add Custom Service." Type a name for the port in the name dialog box, for example "uTorrent." Select the "TCP and UDP" or "TCP/UDP" option in the drop-down connection menu.

8. Type the port number you wrote down into the port number dialog box. If you need to enter a port number range in two dialog boxes, enter the same port number in both.

9. Select "Save" or "OK" or "Finish" to save your changes. Uploads and downloads on uTorrent should now be much faster.
