Transform a pair of football pads into an "Iron Man" costume.

When the movie "Iron Man" was released in 2008, it was an instant fan favorite, especially with children looking for a superhero costume for Halloween. But grown-up fans got into the action as well; some even built $4,000 realistic life-size "Iron Man" costumes that looked as good as the computer-generated film version. Whether you're a parent trying to throw together a cute costume for your child, or an adult who's looking for a simple costume party idea, you can transform into "Iron Man" with a few materials and a little creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a red spandex shirt or tight-fitting sport shirt. Place football shoulder pads on over the shirt. Purchase a battery-operated touch light from your local home-improvement store and hold it against the shirt in the center of your chest, just below the spot where the shoulder pads come together. Touch lights turn on when their dome-like, illuminated surface is touched and turn off when they are pressed again.

Trace a line on the outside of the t-shirt around the touch light with a fabric pen. Remove the football shoulder pads.

    • 2

Measure 1/2-inch in from the circle you drew and cut a circle out of the shirt for the light to fit through. Load batteries into the touch light and test to ensure it works. Place the touch light inside the shirt so that the light pops out through the just-cut hole. Turn the shirt inside out and secure the light to the shirt with duct tape. Turn the shirt right-side-out again.

    • 3

Lay down newspaper on a flat surface outside or in a well-ventilated area. Place shin and elbow guards and hockey gloves on the newspaper. Spray paint the items with two coats of red paint, allowing time to dry in between the coats.

    • 4

Lay down additional sheets of newspaper and place the old shoes on then. Spray paint them with two coats of gold paint, allowing time to dry between the coats.

    • 5

Put on the red spandex shirt and pants followed by the gold shoes. Put on the shin pads followed by the football shoulder pads and elbow guards. Finish with the gloves. Complete your outfit with an "Iron Man" mask or helmet. Press the touch light to replicate the arc light that "Iron Man" wears.
