Place the package of frozen sausage in the refrigerator up to 24 hours before you intend to use it. Thawing in the refrigerator takes the longest but is the safest way to thaw frozen sausage. If you change your mind, you can refreeze the sausage without cooking it.

Put the sausage package inside an air-tight bag -- using a bag prevents water from getting into the product if the original packaging has holes. Put it in a pan and fill the pan with cold water. Change the water every 30 minutes until the sausage thaws. If you want to refreeze the sausage, you'll need to cook it first.
