Back Up the Registry

Click the "Start" button on the Windows taskbar. In the search box, type "regedit." Press the "Enter" key or click the magnifying glass next to the search box. Windows opens the Registry Editor window.

Click and select "Computer" in the left pane of the Registry Editor window. On the Registry Editor menu bar, click "File" then "Export."

Navigate to the folder on your computer where you want to save the registry backup file. Open the destination folder for the backup.

Enter a descriptive name for backup in the "File Name:" field. Click the "Save" button. Windows backs up the registry settings to the file.
Restoring the Registry From a Backup

Click the "Start" button. Type "regedit" in the search box and press the "Enter" key.

Click "File," then "Import" on the Registry Editor menu bar.

Navigate to the registry backup file on your computer. Highlight the file, then click the "Open" button. Windows imports the registry settings from the backup file.

Restart the computer for the restored registry settings to take effect.
