How to Overcome a Lack of References on a Resume
For those entering the work force or for those who for whatever reason have been out of the work force for a while and are looking to get back in, finding references can be difficult. A lack of references, a lack of current references or a lack of recent positive references can all be major obstacle to getting a job. There are, however, a few different ways to get references and a few things you can do to mitigate the damage done in a potential employer's eyes by a lack of references.

Overcome a Lack of References on a Resume
-
1
Consider your age and the job you're applying for before you worry too much about references. If you're young, still in high school for example, references won't be such an important part of your resume, especially for entry level jobs. Most employers will consider you on your other merits if you explain the situation to them.

2
Contact your friends and family friends about being character references. Character references won't hold as much weight as job references, but if the character reference in question is a well known community member or holds a prestigious job, their vouching for you could go a long way.

3
Ask volunteer coordinators or community service managers for a reference if you've done either kind of work. If you haven't, consider doing some. Contact your local municipal offices, for instance, or check in the newspaper. Volunteer opportunities aren't hard to find, and after a few weeks most managers and coordinators will be happy to give you a reference.

4
Ask professors and teachers, both current and past, if they would be willing to act as character references. If you're graduating and looking to enter the work force for the first time, employers may understand a lack of job references and would be satisfied that you impressed your professor or teacher enough to warrant their recommendation.

5
Leave references off of your resume if you can't find any and if you think the job will require some. Explain instead under the references section on your resume or in a cover letter why it is that you don't have any references. Better yet, explain in person why you lack references.
