How to Find a Mac Address Using Vista on a Gateway Computer

Your Gateway computer's Mac address is a unique identifier assigned to its network adapters. This allows your computer to be identified on a network, which also allows servers to grant access to known computers or block unknown computers. In Windows Vista, you can find Mac addresses through the Command Prompt. Each installed network adapter has its own Mac address, so don't be surprised if you see one for your Ethernet card and another for your wireless card.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the "Start" menu, type "cmd" and press "Enter" to launch the Command Prompt.

    • 2

Type "ipconfig /all" in the Command Prompt window and press "Enter."

    • 3

Look through the resulting Command Prompt information for "Physical Address" under the headers "Wireless LAN adapter" and/or "Ethernet adapter." The corresponding 12-character alphanumeric code is the Mac address, and takes the form "00-00-00-00-00-00-00" in Windows Vista. On other systems, it is usually written as "00:00:00:00:00:00."
