How to Install Mulching Blades on a Murray Mower

If you notice your lawn looks brown after you cut the grass, your lawn has too much thatch and not enough live growth. Thatch consists of dead grass stems and roots underneath the new green grass. When the thatch becomes too thick, the grass fails to thrive. Remove thatch every one to two years to prevent a buildup. Murray mulching blades make thatch removal quick and easy. The specially designed blade is installed on the Murray lawnmower in place of the cutting blade. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Drain the Murray lawnmower's fuel tank. So you do not waste gas, plan on mulching the lawn either right away in the spring when the lawnmower engine is still winterized, or after you have used the first tank of gas.

    • 2

Lay the Murray lawnmower on its side with the spark plug facing up. Wedge a piece of scrap wood against the cutting blade so it does not spin during removal.

    • 3

Unscrew the bolt that runs through the hole in the blade's center, using a wrench. Three washers will come off with the bolt. Move the scrap wood out of the way and remove the cutting blade from the blade adapter.

    • 4

Line up the mulching blade's center hole with the blade adapter's hole. Begin hand-screwing the bolt, with the three washers still on it, through the holes. Wedge the scrap wood against the mulching blade so it does not spin. Tighten the bolt with a wrench.

    • 5

Stand the Murray lawnmower upright. Fill the fuel tank with gas and pull the start cord.
