How to Cook With Ground Turmeric
Turmeric is a member of the ginger family. It usually is sold in grocery stores in powdered form and is easily recognized by its bright-yellow color. Turmeric is one of the essential spices needed for making curries and curry powder. This simple vegetable curry recipe is a great introduction to cooking with powdered turmeric. Things You'll Need
- 2 carrots
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 2 medium russet potatoes
- 1 head cauliflower
- Cutting board
- Knife
- ¼ cup (½ stick) butter
- 2 tbsp. olive oil
- Skillet
- 1 tsp. ground turmeric
- 1 tsp. fresh ginger, minced
- 1 tsp. minced garlic
- 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
- ½ tsp. cayenne pepper
- ½ tsp. ground coriander
- ½ tsp. cinnamon
- Small bowl
- Spoon

Wash and chop the carrots, onions, potatoes, and cauliflower. While you are chopping, heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and carrots and cook until they are tender but not browned.

Prepare your curry powder while the onions and carrots are cooking. To make the curry, mix together turmeric, ginger, garlic, cumin, cayenne pepper, coriander and cinnamon in a small bowl. Stir to combine.

Add the spice mixture to the pan, and then add the cauliflower and potatoes. Stir to coat the vegetables with the spices.

Reduce the heat to medium low. Cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are soft. Pour the curry over cooked white rice and serve.
