How to Figure Out What Kind of Sound Card I Have

Save

Every computer that is able to play sound from its internal speakers has a sound card. The sound card is installed inside of the computer. You can replace sound cards if necessary, but before doing so you should first determine which kind of sound card is already installed in your computer. Finding which type of sound card your computer has does not require you to open up your computer.

  • Click the "Start" menu and select "Control Panel."

  • Click "System and Security."

  • Click "Device Manager" under "System." Type the administrator password if prompted.

  • Double-click "Sound, video and game controllers" to expand the category. The sound card and its accompanying identifying information is located in the list that appears.
