How to Check Your Deer Cam

How to Check Your Deer Cam thumbnail
A deer cam can help you determine what deer are in the area and when they are moving.

Deer cams, or trail cams, have become increasingly popular with hunters and nature viewers. The cameras are designed to be motion activated and snap a picture of anything crossing in front of them. This is very useful in scouting locations for hunting and for determining deer patterns of movement. There are a couple of ways to check the pictures on the cameras, depending on the type of camera you are using.

Instructions

    • 1

Approach your camera during a time of day when deer activity is low. Usually mid-day works best. This will help you avoid scaring deer that may be in the area and changing their regular patterns. It is also helpful if you can approach the camera from a route that will not cross over the trails that the deer are using. This will limit your scent signature in the area.

Open the camera cover. On most models this requires turning a thumb screw to release the front cover, which opens upward on a hinge. If necessary, open the secondary cover that protects the SD card.

    • 3

Remove the SD card by pushing on it to trigger the release. The card will pop out slightly and can then be removed. I suggest having a second SD card that you can put in the camera so that you do not have to worry about coming back right away.

Insert the SD card into a computer and open it with your computer's photo viewing software. You can then click through the photos, deleting or saving pictures as you see fit. It is a good idea to note the day and time that deer are appearing on the camera so that you can reference past and future pictures and get a clear idea of the deer patterns.

Save the pictures to a folder on your computer and clear the SD card so that you can reuse it in the camera.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some cameras have viewing screens built into the camera. These are usually not very good for seeing the pictures and it is best to view the pictures on a computer.

  • The larger the SD card, by way of gigabytes, the more pictures it will store.

  • Most cameras will hold a small number of pictures on an internal drive if an SD card is not installed. This is not recommended unless you plan on checking the camera daily. Even then, the drive may fill up early and cause you to miss a quality picture.
