How Can I Get Information or a Copy of an Expired Military ID Card?
When a military identification card expires, military regulations require that it is returned to a local Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System office so it can be destroyed. Expired military ID cards are destroyed so that unauthorized people, including civilians, cannot use them to exploit service members, gain access to military installations or otherwise use them in an illegal manner. DEERS maintains records of all ID cards it issues, but DEERS personnel will not release information to third parties except next-of-kin or those with a valid Power of Attorney document.

Sign in at the front desk of the DEERS office and wait to be called. All DEERS offices, like other military services, require visitors to sign in for appointments.

5
Show your Power of Attorney document or death certificate to the DEERS team member who assists you. Ask for copies of all past Department of Defense Form 1172s pertaining to the service member, which contain all enrollment information necessary for DEERS to issue ID cards. You may also request a copy of the service member's scanned ID card from the DEERS system.
