How to Make Chaps Out of Jeans
Chaps, known as the clothing choice for cowboys and vaqueros, consist of two separate pants connected at the waist. Because they work in a very similar fashion to pants, it is easy to cut a pair of blue jeans into chaps. Though a pattern will make your task easier, you can create a pattern yourself by removing the crotch section from the front to the rear waistband, keeping the waistband intact. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place your jeans on a flat surface with the front-side facing upwards. Place the pattern for chaps next to the jeans. A simple chaps pattern looks like jeans with the crotch removed from the front to the back.
-
2
Trace the pattern onto the front side of the jeans using a marker. Draw the lines for the portion of the jeans you must remove. Draw lines through the outline of the section to be removed.

3
Turn the jeans over and trace the pattern for the rear section onto the back of the jeans.
-
4
Cut the sections that must be removed out of the jeans using a pair of scissors. If your pattern requires any strips that connect the two sides of the chaps, cut a rectangular strip of denim from the removed section.
-
5
Place the chaps flat on a table and place rectangular strips of denim between the two sides of the chaps in order to connect them, if necessary. Sew this strip of denim to the jeans by hand using a needle and thread.

6
Try the chaps on, over your current pair of pants, to see if they fit. Remove the chaps and add any decorations, such as patches or frayed edges. To make a frayed edge, glue long strips of denim to the outer side of each leg. In most cases, you will need extra denim to make frayed edges.
