Family Safety enables a parent to control web access for their children when they are not around.

Family Safety is a web filter and accessibility control tool available for free from Microsoft. It filters access to web sites so that children logging in are either unable to access these specified sites or logs the access to be reported back to the parent at a later time. In addition to blocking access to the Internet or specific web pages, Family Safety allows a parent to control who children are chatting with the Windows Messenger.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the Windows Live Family Safety filter from the Windows Live website.

    • 2

Click the Windows button and select "Windows Live" > "Windows Live Family Safety" from the menu. The setup dialog will appear so that you can add children's names to the filter.

    • 3

Select "Add or manage family members on this computer". You will be asked to login. If you are going to modify settings for children, you should use a parent or other adult login. Add the names of your children to be monitored by the filter and click "Close" when you are finished.

Open your browser and navigate to the Family Safety web site. Select the child's name that you want to setup and click the "Edit settings" link.

    • 5

Click the "Web Filtering" option in the left-hand column and select the "Turn on web filtering" radio button. The level of filtering, from permissive to restrictive, is set by moving the slider to the desired setting. The most permissive setting turns off Internet access and the least permissive simply issues a warning if adult sites are accessed. An additional option, accessible by selecting "Web filtering lists", enables you to define a filter list of specific web sites to which you want to restrict access.

Click "Save" to retain the settings.
