How to Soften a Bridle
While new leather bridles can prove not only useful but attractive when placed on a horse, they sometimes feel uncomfortable and unyielding due to non-use. The rigid leather of the bridle can rub the horse's face and cause unpleasant irritation or discomfort for the animal. Fortunately, you can remedy the situation with an application of a certain type of oil. Once you apply it a few times, it will soften the bridle and make it more comfortable for your equine.
Things You'll Need
- Soap
- Water
- 2 sponges
- Chamois cloth
- 1/2 tsp. pure Neatsfoot oil

1
Start with a clean bridle. If the bridle is dirty, take it apart and wash it with a sponge dampened with soapy water. Rinse the sponge well until damp and wipe the bridle to remove the soap residue. Pat the bridle dry with a chamois cloth.

2
Dampen a sponge and apply approximately 1/2 tsp. of Neatsfoot oil to it. Wipe the Neatsfoot oil onto all surfaces of the bridle.

Reassemble the bridle. The leather will feel somewhat sticky, but should be softer and more pliable. Repeat the oiling each time after use.

Tips & Warnings
Never soak a bridle in any type of oil. It can cause the bridle to become weak and deteriorate. (Reference 3)
Avoid Neatsfoot oil mixtures that contain petroleum distillates because they can cause deterioration of the stitching on the bridle or other tack. (Reference 3)
