How to Draw Cool Stars With a Cool Background
Stars look like dots of light from Earth, but that doesn't mean we don't have our own interpretation of their forms. From planetariums to paintings to glow-in-the-dark stickers, stars show up everywhere. When you're ready to draw cool stars on a cool background, draw your inspiration from art or nature. Consider your materials carefully, too -- some may work better for your purposes than others. Don't stick with a five-point star, either; there are so many ways to illustrate cool stars that you shouldn't get bogged down with just one.

1
Search for inspiration. Vincent Van Gogh's famous painting "Starry Night" has extremely cool and unique stars on a varied, original background. Lots of modern art incorporates stars, as does religious art. Look at the many kinds of stars in art.

2
Sketch out a basic star on paper with a pen. Add lines to it to change the shape, while leaving it recognizable as a star. Keep starting over. See what kind of cool designs you can come up with.

3
Experiment with different kinds of paper. Wallpaper might offer a cool background for your stars. Choose a paper with some kind of texture to give the picture some depth.
-
4
Experiment with different mediums. Use watercolors for softer, calmer stars and colored pencils for dark, smeared stars. Crayons can make really fun, bright stars -- you can even draw bright colors with bright crayons, go over them with black crayon, then scrape away some of the black to create a dark, shining star.

Use your fingers or a pen to punch out star-shaped holes in your picture. Some stars will be there, some will only be the light coming through the background. Place the piece in a sunny room or in front of a light.
