Brainstorm ideas on why you would be a strong fit for the position. List experiences that might relate to the position, even if these were volunteer work, unpaid experiences, hobbies, or research interests. Reach as far back as your college or high school days. Make notes discussing how each experience might benefit you in the position for which you're applying. Be thorough.

Begin the first draft of the essay, using a computer. Use the notes to help you construct the letter. Be specific about the position for which you are applying and mention where you learned about it. Be clear about why you are interested in the position and express your enthusiasm.
Discuss your experiences and how they relate to the position. Relate achievements and strengths that are relevant to the position. Write the letter so it mirrors your personality. Strike a professional yet friendly tone.
Do not be as concerned with structure, grammar, and sentence wording in the first draft. Be more concerned with getting your ideas down.

In the second draft, focus on coherency, structure, and concise wording. Check for misspellings, grammatical errors, and faulty wording. Rearrange sentences and paragraphs if necessary. Do this until the essay feels like a strong one to you. Put it aside for several hours or a day.
-

When you return to the essay, print it out and read through it at least a couple of times. Make notes of any changes you'd like to make. Make these changes in the computer. Read it at least once more before sending it off.
