How to Write a Check for More Than $1,000

Many businesses accept payment by personal check.

With the convenience of debit cards to pay your bill at the store and online banking to pay your bills online, checks are not as used as they once were. When you write a check you must first ensure you have the funds in your bank account to cover the dollar amount for which you write your check. From there you must make sure to fill out all of the required information to make your check valid. Writing a check for more than $1,000 is no different than writing a check for $10.

Instructions

1. Open your checkbook to the first blank check available. Using a pen -- never a pencil -- enter the date at the top right hand corner of your check on the line titled "Date".

2. Write the name of the person or business receiving your payment on the line marked "Pay to the Order of". Write the full name of the recipient, such as "Joe Smith", rather than "Joe" or "Joe S." Businesses sometimes allow you to abbreviate the title of the company; Alphabet County Utilities might accept checks made out to "ACU", for example.

3. Enter the numerical dollar amount of your check in the box immediately to the right of the "Pay to the Order of" line. If you are writing a check for $1,500 you will write "1,500.00" in the box.

4. Write out the amount of your check on the line followed by the phrase "Dollars". For example, you will write "one thousand five hundred and no/100 dollars".

5. Sign your name to the bottom right side of your check. You must sign your full name as it appears on your check.

6. Use the line on the bottom left of your check to write any additional information. For example, if the check being written is to pay your mortgage bill for the month you should write your mortgage account number on this line.
