How to Find Wireless Internet Connections

Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system has built-in Wi-Fi connectivity features for desktop computers, laptops and netbooks that have an installed wireless card. Using these features, you can scan the area for open and secured Wi-Fi networks and connect to them for Internet access. Whether you're at home or on the road, you can stay connected by finding and connecting to a wireless Internet connection. Learn how to do so in just a few steps.

      Click the wireless Internet icon in the system tray. This icon has connection bars with an orange asterisk on top. A list of nearby wireless networks is displayed.

      Select a wireless network by clicking on it, then click the "Connect" button.

      Enter the wireless network's security key when prompted, then click the "OK" button. If the wireless network you're connecting to is unsecured, this box will not display and you will be connected to the network automatically.

  • Do not connect to unsecured networks you don't have permission to access.
