C5 Corvette Spark Plug Removal

Spark plugs are a basic component of a Corvette's ignition system that ensure the motor receives a constant and reliable supply of spark. Over time, plugs can become fouled and should be replaced as part of routine maintenance such as oil changes and the like. The plugs on a C5-generation Corvette are relatively straightforward to replace, though clearance in the engine bay is relatively limited.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plug socket
  • Socket set
  • Swivel extension
  • Remove the spark plugs when the engine is cold to avoid any warping due to heat differences between the plug and the engine.

  • Pry up the plastic fuel rail covers on the driver's side of the engine by hand and set them out of the way. Remove the large vacuum line that goes to the brake booster by pulling the line off by hand. The line is held on with a rubber grommet in the booster. Push the line out of the way so that their is additional clearance access to the plugs.

  • Remove the spark plug wires from the coil packs by simultaneously twisting and pulling them off. Label each wire with a marker and a piece of tape as to which cylinder the wire goes to.

  • Remove the other end of the spark plug wire from the plug itself by pulling and turning the plug wire from the base.

  • Do not grab the plug wire anywhere on its length and simply pull on it to remove it from the plug. Set the plug wires and their heat shields aside.

  • Remove the spark plugs. The most difficult one to remove is the rear most one on the driver's side. Use a swivel socket to allow as much maneuverability as possible. Slide the plug socket onto the top of the plug, ensuring that it seats properly. Loosen the plug by turning counter clockwise. Withdraw the plug from the engine.

  • Remove the remaining seven spark plugs in the same manner until all eight plugs are removed. Re-installation or installation of new plugs is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place the vehicle in park on a flat surface and engage the parking brake before beginning work.
