Sew a letter onto a varsity jacket.

A varsity letter refers to a patch a student athlete receives to signify his participation in a varsity sport in high school or college. Traditionally, varsity letters are sewn onto the front or back of a varsity jacket so the athlete can show off her accomplishments. You can sew letters onto a jacket with a needle and thread, no sewing machine is required.

Instructions

    • 1

Position the varsity letter where you want it on the jacket. The traditional placement for a first letter is on the front of the jacket, over the heart. Lay the jacket flat on your work surface and pin the letter in place on the front of the jacket with straight pins, ensuring it is straight.

Thread a needle with strong thread. You'll need a needle designed for heavier fabrics, as varsity jackets are generally made of heavy wool.

    • 3

Whip stitch around the edges of the patch. You'll work exclusively on the front of the jacket. Start by sliding the needle through a small amount of the jacket fabric, just under the patch, and then up through the patch on the inside edge of the trim around the edge. Bring the needle and thread around the edge of the patch and stitch through the jacket again. Repeat this stitch, making a neat row of close stitches all the way around the patch. Make one last stitch and bring the needle through the loop a few times before pulling tight to make a knot. Trim the thread.
