SOP for Battery Installation

On most cell phones, installing a new battery only takes a few minutes. It's a matter of popping the battery door off, removing the old battery, putting in the new one and replacing the door. Check the phone's manual for specific battery installation instructions. If you don't have the manual, you can follow these standard operating procedure instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the phone over so you are looking at the back panel.

    • 2

Locate the battery door. In clamshell phones, it is located on the bottom section. In bar phones, there is usually a line across the back case that shows the top of the battery door.

    • 3

Look for a button or release switch. Most phones do not have one, but on phones that do, the button is usually located near the top of the battery door and is very conspicuous. Press and hold down on the button if applicable.

    • 4

Place your thumb on the back of the phone and pull down. Most phones have battery doors that slide off towards the bottom. If the battery door doesn't come off, try pushing it towards the top.

    • 5

Set the battery cover aside. You should see the old battery inside the battery compartment. The battery will either have fingernail grooves on the top or side, or the phone will have a release tab to pull that will pop the battery out of the compartment.

    • 6

Slide the new battery into place. The battery will only fit in one way. Make sure the contacts on the phone touch the contacts on the battery.

    • 7

Slide the battery door back onto the phone, reversing the direction it came off.

Tips & Warnings

  • On some phones, there is no separate battery door. The back of the battery forms the back of the phone. This type of phone always has a battery release button somewhere on the back or bottom edge of the phone.

  • If the new battery will not fit into the battery compartment, or the door won't fit back on, don't force it. You may have the wrong size battery. If you have purchased an extended battery, the phone may need a new battery door in order to fit the larger battery.
