How to Choose Exterior Colors for a House's Roof & Siding

Home improvement and redecoration can be lots of fun, but there are some hard choices to be made. Select the right colors for your house's roof and siding to make it attractive and to look appropriate in the neighborhood. In the end, the color of your home's roof and siding is mainly a matter of your preference. It's not up to anyone else. Search your preferences to see what you like and what you'll be happiest with when the house is done.

  • Check with your Homeowner's Association to see whether there are any guidelines you need to follow when selecting colors for your roof and siding.

  • Check out other houses in the neighborhood. If every house has a gray roof, you might want to consider a gray roof as well to keep the neighborhood looking uniform. Drive around other neighborhoods and keep your eyes peeled for a color combination you like.

  • Take a look at your shutters. Homes that have matching roofs and shutters are common, and the look might work for your home as well.

  • Look at the different colors available in the siding and roofing styles you've selected. If any of them match a color that has meaning to you, consider using that to make your home very personal.

  • Test colors against the background of your home. If everything is green, a nice blue or yellow siding could look excellent with a gray or black roof. In a more desert or urban setting, you might want to go with white, green or gray siding and a black roof.
