Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, width and depth of your futon mattress. Use the depth measurement and add that number to your length and width measurements. Add 2 more inches all the way around to allow for hemming.

    • 2

Cut out the fabric to the necessary measurements. Use only one piece of fabric for best results.

    • 3

Spread the piece of fabric out on a large, flat surface, such as the floor.

    • 4

Fold your fabric in half along the length and then again along the width. To make sure you folded correctly, the four corners will all be together.

    • 5

Line up the fabric evenly so that the edges of the four corners match up exactly. Pin the four layers of fabric together to hold them in place.

    • 6

Go back to your depth measurement and use that to cut out squares from each of the four corners. For example, if your depth measurement was 5 inches, mark with the chalk on the top layer of fabric a 5 inch square right on the corner.

    • 7

Cut out all four squares at the same time.

    • 8

Unfold the fabric and work on one corner at a time. Fold the corners where you cut out the squares so that the raw edges meet. Use pins to hold in place and sew.

    • 9

Repeat with all four corners to give your futon cover a fitted look.

Tips & Warnings

  • When sewing a futon cover make sure to use fabric that can withstand a lot of use. Choose at least a mid-weight fabric instead of something that is thinner.

  • If you cannot find fabric that is wide enough to completely cover your futon mattress, look for king-size sheets. Look for a high-quality flat sheet as the fabric should be heavy enough to hold up for some time.
