1
Cover your work area with newspaper. Cut off the stem of the pumpkin. Use a spoon or seed scooper to remove the seeds and stringy bits inside of the pumpkin.
-
2
Trim the stencil paper to create a 1/2-inch border around the stencil pattern. Lay the pumpkin on its side. Tape the stencil onto the side of the pumpkin, starting at the top, then the sides, before taping on the bottom.

3
Poke the pointed tip of the transfer tool through the stencil paper, around the design on the stencil to put an outline of the design onto the pumpkin. Make the holes 1/8-inch apart as you push dots into the skin, not through it, to mark where you need to cut the pumpkin. Check to make sure that you have dotted the entire outline of the picture on the Ravens stencil before removing it.

4
Insert the tip of the serrated pumpkin carving saw into a hole that you made with the transfer tool. Cut out the design by connecting the dots, or cutting from dot to dot. Move the carving saw in and out in a sawing motion to cut through the pumpkin. Follow the pattern and take your time to make your cuts accurate. To cut sharp corners of the Ravens' mascot beak, cut to the end of one line, remove the saw, and reinsert it into the other line of the corner and start cutting the other line of the beak.

5
Trim the inside edges of the pumpkin, cutting the excess pumpkin meat down to a 45 degree angle to let more light through the carved pattern. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly onto the cut edges to preserve your pumpkin. This will keep the moisture from escaping the pumpkin, which causes the pumpkin to shrivel up.

Tips & Warnings
To remove large pieces, you can always cut them into smaller sections while they are in the pumpkin so that you can push them out with your fingers.
