How to Get a P Endorsement Form the New York DMV
New York's Department of Motor Vehicles issues P, or Passenger Endorsements, for drivers of commercial vehicles. This endorsement is required to drive a vehicle designed to carry 15 or more passengers (excluding the driver). Drivers of school buses require a separate "S" endorsement. People planning to operate vehicles solely for personal or family use do not need a P endorsement.

1
Study Section 4 of the official "New York State Commercial Driver's Manual." This is available for download on the official website of the DMV and is designed to help you prepare for the test required for a "P" endorsement. Pay specific attention to the questions at the end of the section, which provide practice for the exam.

2
Contact your nearest DMV office and ask to schedule a knowledge test for a P Test endorsement. You will also need to take a knowledge test covering any specialized equipment or standards related to the specific vehicle you wish to drive. For instance, if your vehicle uses air brakes, you will need to take a test based on Section 5 of the "Commercial Driver's Manual."

3
Take the test at the time scheduled. You can take the test more than once if you do not pass the first time.
-
4
Schedule a commercial driver's license road test. You can do this on the official website of the DMV.
-
5
Attend and take the road test at the time you reserved. If you pass, you will be awarded a temporary CDL pass which will allow you to drive commercially immediately. You must appear at a DMV office to get your license permanently amended.
