Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the Betty Crocker cake mix as directed. Depending on the type of cake you are baking, you can expect to add water, vegetable oil and eggs to the cake mix. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

    • 2

Prepare cake pans by thoroughly greasing the bottom and sides with either margarine or cooking spray.

    • 3

Pour cake mix into the pans. Bake for between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of your cake pans and the type of cake pans you are using. Allow the cakes to cool until firm.

    • 4

Use your serrated knife to cut the rounded tops of the cakes -- so that they will lay level on the plate. Turn the cake pan upside-down and deposit the cake onto tray or plate. If the cake seems stuck, place it on the plate and tap the cake pan gently on the bottom until it comes out. Do not tear the cake.

    • 5

Print out Betty Crocker Pony Cake Template (see Resources). Cut out the pieces of template and place them over the cakes. The body will be on one cake, the head and tail on the other.

    • 6

Assemble the pony. Place the cut-out body on the cake plate with the head on one side and the tail on the other. Put icing on the head, where it connects to the body and on the tail, where it connects to the body to hold them together.

    • 7

Ice the pony cake. Betty Crocker recommends mixing your own icing colors by adding red food color to vanilla icing to make pink and mixing chocolate and vanilla icing together to make a light brown. Use dark brown chocolate icing as piping for the mane and tail, light brown for the body and pink to make a saddle blanket on the back. Place a small piece of hard candy on the pony's head for it's eye.
