How to Draw a Clarinet

How to Draw a Clarinet thumbnail
The clarinet was invented in 1680 by German Composer Johann Christoph Denner.

Clarinets are cylindrical woodwind instruments. They come in more than a dozen varieties, each differing slightly in shape, size and pitch. A standard clarinet consists of a cylindrical base, single reed, a lower joint and bottom joint (each with several keys depending on the type of clarinet), trill keys, and a bell. Focusing on these standard elements makes clarinets an easy instrument to draw no matter your artistic background.

Instructions

  1. Draw a Clarinet

    • 1

Draw two vertical, parallel lines approximately 1/2 inch apart and 6 inches long. Attach the lines at the top with two parallel lines 1/8 inch. Attach the lines at the bottom with two lines 1/2 inch apart. Curve all horizontal lines slightly upward or downward, but be consistent. Do not curve one up and the other down or the perspective of the picture will be inaccurate.

    • 2

Add the mouthpiece and reed. Draw a bullet shape slightly narrower than the cylinder and 1 1/2 inch long. Draw the metal reed attachment piece. Begin with a circle in the center toward the bottom of the mouthpiece. Draw four lines, two on top and two on bottom, from the oval on both sides, attaching it to the mouthpiece outline.

    • 3

Separate the lower and upper joints. Draw two horizontal lines, slightly curved upward or downward, in the center of the cylinder approximately 1/2 inch apart.

    • 4

Add the keys to the clarinet. Draw five ovals, the same size as the one you drew on the mouthpiece, in a line down the center of the cylinder. Place two ovals in the top section and three in the bottom section.

    • 5

Add trill keys. These will differentiate your clarinet drawing from a simple recorder. Sketch two 1/8 inch parallel lines coming down from the top left of the cylinder at a 45 degree angle. Draw a straight line down from the top line 2 inches long. Halfway down the line on the left side, draw a half oval slightly drooping downward. Draw another, slightly larger, droopy oval at the bottom of the line. Trill keys differ in placement and number depending on the type of clarinet.

    • 6

Complete the clarinet by adding the bell to the bottom of the cylinder. Curve the bottom of the bell. If you curved the other horizontal lines upward, add another line to the bottom of the bell curving the same direction. Shade in the section between the two curves. It should appear as if you are slightly looking up at the clarinet. If you curved the other lines downward, leave the bottom curve of the bell as is.
