How to Make Your Own Donation Scroll for a Wedding

How to Make Your Own Donation Scroll for a Wedding thumbnail
Scrolls can be unrolled during the reception to share your donation with your guests.

Brides and grooms are often established in careers and have their own homes by the time they stroll down the aisle, and that comfort may be fueling the trend of making donations to charitable organizations instead of passing out wedding favors or asking for gifts. You can honor a charity of your choice and inform your wedding guests of what you have done through the use of a donation scroll, which you can leave at each of the place settings during the wedding reception.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave a margin of one to two inches at both the top and the bottom of each scroll. You may hand-write the text for your scrolls or type the scroll text on your computer and print them.

    • 2

Write the text for your scrolls, centering it in the middle of your paper. You should include information about the charity to which you donated, including its name and what services the charity performs. If you made the donation in honor of a loved one, include that person's name in your message.

    • 3

Cut each scroll to the preferred size, leaving the margins at the top and bottom intact.

    • 4

Select dowels for your scrolls, which are available in craft or hardware stores. Dowels should be half an inch in diameter, and they should extend about half an inch out from the scroll itself on either side. For an 8 x 11 inch scroll, a dowel should be no longer than 12 inches.

    • 5

Paint dowels with acrylic paint and allow to dry, if desired. You can also tie ribbon about the ends of dowels.

    • 6

Apply glue in a horizontal line in the white space above and below the text of the scroll. A dowel should be pressed into the glue at each end of the scroll. Allow to dry.

    • 7

Roll the scroll up and tie a ribbon about the scroll to keep it closed. For protection, you can also place the scrolls in a box until the wedding day. Poster tubes can also protect scrolls from damage.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using a computer to make your scrolls, choose an easy-to-read font style, such as Times New Roman or Arial. If the scrolls are hand-written, write slowly and make the letters large. You can also write out one scroll then copy the rest to reduce strain on your hand.

  • Dowels do not have to be wooden

  • Study charities before you make any donations, using sites like Charity Navigator. This will ensure that the charity you have chosen is legitimate.

  • If you do not wish to make scrolls, many charities offer brides and grooms customizable cards explaining the donation to use as favors instead.

  • Thank guests for attending on your donation scrolls and explain that the donation is in lieu of favors.
